Does Your Hair Supplier Hold Inventory for You? Here's Why You Should Reconsider.
May 18th, 2026

As competition intensifies in the hair extension industry, many emerging brands look for ways to reduce inventory pressure and speed up delivery. Their common request? Asking factories to stock pre colored hair on their behalf.

Has your supplier ever given you these two options?

Option 1 – Use the factory's color ring

Pick any shade from their existing stock and sell it under your own brand.

Option 2 – Use your own color ring, but skip the MOQ
The factory promises to hold your inventory in their warehouse. You can order small quantities anytime, and they ship from your reserved stock.

Many startups see this as generous support. But before you celebrate, ask yourself three questions:

1. Why do mature, established factories rarely offer this?

2. If the factory uses the same color card for multiple clients, can your brand still be unique?

3. Is your custom-colored hair inventory truly safe in someone else's warehouse—and can an NDA really protect you?

Let me share a few perspectives from the manufacturing side.

1. Why mature factories don't offer this:

In high-quality hair extensions, raw materials account for up to 80% of the total cost. Stocking inventory for clients means tying up significant capital in raw hair. If multiple clients request this, the factory's cash flow takes a massive hit—a risk that few established factories are willing to take.

In reality, inventory holding is usually done by some startups that are desperate for orders. They take risks to win clients. But can the supply stability of such factories withstand scrutiny?

2. How do you guarantee uniqueness?

If a factory holds inventory using its own color ring, it means they need many clients to help digest that inventory. As a result, they cannot guarantee that they won't supply other brands or salons in your local area.

3. Is your custom inventory safe in their warehouse?

In most hair factories, unfortunately, the answer is no. Colored hair and raw materials are often stored together in the same space. When other clients request samples, factories tend to use whatever colored hair is available—including yours.

And when clients visit the factory, they can easily see other brands' custom inventory sitting on the shelves. So yes, your inventory is visible too.

An NDA sounds good on paper. But in practice, proving a breach is expensive, difficult, and rarely worth the fight.
